Some chefs specialise in, for example, the preparation of desserts, sauces, seafood, and vegetables. There are several types of chef, including commis chef, section chef, sous chef, head chef, and executive head chef.
You could work for a wide range of establishments, including hotels and restaurants, staff canteens, schools and universities, care homes, hospitals, pubs and bars.
You can work wherever a kitchen has a vacancy for a chef. Hours are demanding, often requiring you to start very early in the day and perhaps being the last to leave at night. Holidays and public holidays are busy times for many establishments, so you would be expected to work then, too.
A chef in a pub restaurant can expect to earn around £30,000 a year, with salaries rising to the top for exceptional talent in big-name restaurants and hotels. The higher your position, the more you are paid and the more responsibilities you have.
Full-time employees will get paid holidays, some or all meals during the working day, and other benefits (such as bonus plans, training schemes, and partnership programmes) depending on the size of the establishment.
If you work for a sizeable establishment, or one that is part of a chain, there will be career advancement opportunities.
You will be responsible for the preparation of meals, staff training, ordering supplies, planning menus, managing the kitchen budget, enforcing health and safety regulations, preserving food quality, and recruiting new staff.
You may be able to start as an apprentice and learn directly from experienced chefs, but generally you will be expected to have prior experience as well as relevant qualifications.
You will need to demonstrate skills in leadership, time management, creativity, oral and written communication, teamwork and team management, organisation and administration, food preparation and presentation, budget management, and maintenance of quality and hygiene.
