Catering Manager

You'll be responsible for supplying food and drink to corporate and commercial events, as well as weddings and parties, getting involved in everything from cooking to serving.

Who can I work for?

A huge number of caterers are self-employed as many catering operations are run as private businesses. You could also work for a number of businesses, both large and small.

Where and when can I work?

You will generally be based in a large, busy kitchen. Be prepared to travel to various events, whether at an outdoor garden party or an indoor conference at a banqueting hall. The hours you work in this role would vary, due to people eating at different times of the day; you would be particularly busy during evenings and on the weekends.

What can I earn?

Salary as a catering manager varies from person to person and company to company. You could expect to earn anything from £25,000 to £50,000 a year, although with catering firms making money on a per-event basis sometimes, it's hard to suggest an exact amount.

What are the benefits?

You'll meet a lot of interesting party people, enjoy the benefits of a close-knit team and feel satisfied when an event goes to plan, which will hopefully be a regular occurrence!

Are there chances of promotion?

Most catering managers are self-employed, but the nature of your job may progress, such as moving onwards and upwards to bigger and better events.

What will I be responsible for?

You could expect to be responsible for everything from preparing and serving drink, to organising your waiting staff, as well as building up a client base through both marketing and word of mouth.

What qualifications do I need?

Most caterers will go to catering college to study a relevant City and Guilds certificate (NVQ or other), such as hospitality or catering. Or, you could undertake a cookery diploma or masters course at a private school, which could prove expensive and less catering-focused.

Do I need any experience?

Experience is greatly sought after, so work experience or shadowing a catering manager would be a great bonus. The more experience and variety of cooking you can get, the better.

What attributes are needed?

You must be able to stand the heat, both in and out of the kitchen, as things can get tense. Working as a catering manager is a role in which it's easy to feel pressured, so you need to have great people skills, work to deadlines and feel confident in your ability.
