Quality Engineer

A quality engineer has a varied range of skills to fulfill many roles, from overseeing everyday engineering activities to acting as a liaison between suppliers and customers. They work across departments and with people from all areas of a sector.

Who can I work for?

You could be employed in a variety of sectors, in the public and private sector. This includes working for independent engineering firms, contractors and consultancies, manufacturers and designers.

Where and when can I work?

There are positions available throughout the UK and depending on the sector you work in there are opportunities to work overseas too. Your hours will vary depending on your employer and the field you are working in.

What can I earn?

Salary ranges between £25,000 and £35,000 in the UK. This will vary depending on location and previous experience in the role.

Are there chances of promotion?

In larger organisations there may be the potential to manage a team of quality engineers or experts, overseeing all aspects of the role. You might even look to move into project management or senior management roles.

What will I be responsible for?

Handling customer quality assurance issues, reviewing operating procedures, undertaking training and development for other colleagues, liaising between different departments, advising on and implementing new ideas and developments.

Do I need any experience?

Most quality engineers hold a Masters degree, although this may not always be necessary so long as you have extensive experience working in your field of engineering.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be a strong team player, with excellent communication skills and the ability to provide solutions in stressful situations. You should be methodical, detail-driven and able to multi-task to meet deadlines.
