Design Engineer

A design engineer researches and develops ideas for new products and production systems. They also work to improve the performance and efficiency of existing products.

Who can I work for?

You could work in a variety of industries from electronics to textiles, and on any project from redesigning a television to building car parts.

Where and when can I work?

Typically you will work Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm. It is primarily and office-based role.

What can I earn?

Starting salaries are approximately £22,000 a year with a potential to earn in excess of £40,000 with experience.

What are the benefits?

After you have qualified, many companies will continue your training and pay for further education and courses so you can add to your skillset and enhance your career.

Are there chances of promotion?

With sufficient experience, you can become a project manager, strategic planner or consultant design engineer. You can also further your career by working towards incorporated or chartered status.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be required to research new developments and innovations and turn these ideas into technical plans and designs. You will then test and modify these in line with the brief and ensure a product is fully ready for manufacturing.

Do I need any experience?

You will ideally have a degree or BTEC in a relevant subject including engineering product design, industrial design, computer-aided design engineering, engineering design and manufacture and materials science.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be creative with strong problem-solving skills and have a working knowledge of design programmes, such as CAD. An excellent grasp of engineering and design principles and an understanding of manufacturing processes are also beneficial.
