Gas Engineer

A gas engineer installs and maintains the pipelines that supply homes and businesses across the country.

Who can I work for?

You could work for a gas distribution company, a contractor that carries out work for them, or for a construction company building new developments.

Where and when can I work?

You will typically work 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday; however you will also be expected to be on call for emergencies and out-of-hours work. Most of the work is undertaken outdoors and there are opportunities across the UK.

What can I earn?

Trainee or apprentice gas engineers usually start on around £11,000 a year. This rises to between £16,000 and £18,000 once the apprenticeship is complete, and the average salary for a gas engineer with a few years' experience is about £25,000 a year.

What are the benefits?

It is a solid job role, with regular work and a high demand for candidates. Depending on your employer, you might also get the chance to travel the country – and maybe even further afield.

Are there chances of promotion?

You could progress into a team leader role or into management. You could also move into field or project engineering, or even into related areas, such as technical sales.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be responsible for laying and repairing gas pipes and mains systems, connecting homes and businesses to the gas network, installing and maintaining gas pressure control equipment and responding to emergency gas leaks.

Do I need any experience?

Most gas engineers have undertaken an apprenticeship scheme. This involves on-the-job learning as well as classroom and home-based work. It's also useful to have previous experience or qualifications in engineering, building services engineering, plumbing or construction.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be practical, polite and professional and be able to work as part of a team. You should be able to follow instructions and have a high level of physical fitness in order to work outdoors, in all weathers.
