The starting salary is between £20,000 and £24,000, going up to about £45,000 at senior level.

What are the benefits?

There are lots of opportunities available for maintenance engineers across the country, in a variety of sectors. The work is also varied and you could be working on a number of different jobs at one go.

Are there chances of promotion?

You can progress to become a technical specialist and eventually move into senior engineering roles such as maintenance manager or project manager.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be responsible for designing maintenance strategies, planning and scheduling planned and unplanned work, diagnosing breakdown problems, carrying out quality inspections, arranging procurement of fixtures, fittings or components and monitoring maintenance costs.

Do I need any experience?

Many maintenance engineers have worked as fitters or technicians. They will have undertaken and an apprenticeship with an engineering, manufacturing or transport operating company. You can also enter the role with a relevant degree.

What attributes are needed?

You will need the ability to understand a wide range of engineering functions and procedures and be able to diagnose problems and solutions for them. You should be able to work well under pressure and have excellent communication and people management skills.
