Network Engineer

Network engineers install, maintain and support computer communication networks within an organisation or between organisations.

Who can I work for?

You can work as part of an organisation's IT support team or as part of an IT networking consultancy firm working with a number of clients.

Where and when can I work?

You will typically work 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. However, you might be required to work at weekends or in the evening in case of major technical problems.

What can I earn?

The average salary for a junior network engineer is £27,500. This can rise to as much as £42,000 with experience and senior network engineers can earn in excess of £50,000.

What are the benefits?

Work within a large organisation or as a consultant is varied and fast-paced, so you will never be bored. It's also a solid career prospect with lots of room for promotion and the potential to earn a good salary.

Are there chances of promotion?

You can progress to network management positions or potentially transfer into other IT roles, such as project management.

What will I be responsible for?

Installing, supporting and maintaining new server hardware and software infrastructure including virus protection, applications, printers, drivers and emails. You will also be setting up user accounts and passwords, monitoring network usage, planning and implementing future IT developments, keeping internal networks running and, in some cases, providing training.

Do I need any experience?

The role is accessible to all candidates although a degree in a relevant subject, such as computer science or engineering, will be beneficial. Work experience is also desirable as is a basic understanding of IT.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be able to work well under pressure, be organised and able to prioritise your workload and have excellent communication skills, as the work may require interrupting other colleagues and clients. You should also have an analytical mind and a great eye for detail.
