Clerical Admin

A clerical worker, or clerical assistant, helps to manage the routine administration tasks within an organisation such as typing letters, filing, photocopying and supporting reception.

Who can I work for?

You can work in any company and across any sector. Any industry that requires basic administrative support on a day-to-day basis will employ a clerical worker.

Where and when can I work?

You&ll be based in an office and work standard hours of 9am- 5pm, Monday to Friday. Clerical workers can also be employed on a part-time basis, depending on the role.

What can I earn?

A full-time worker will start on around £12,000 and can earn as much as £24,000 with experience.

What are the benefits?

It is solid, regular work that will give you a good basis in office skills. You can also look to specialise to become a legal clerk or accounts clerk, for example.

Are there chances of promotion?

In bigger organisations, where you are part of a team of clerical assistants you can rise through the ranks to become a senior clerk, section head or office manager. With the right qualifications you could transfer into another department where your skills are well suited, like HR, and work your way up.

What will I be responsible for?

It&s likely you&ll start with the easier tasks like managing the post and filing, then work up to more complex tasks such as helping with research for projects and light accounting duties.

Do I need any experience?

A lot of clerical workers are able to secure a job straight from school but many employers do look for solid GCSE results, in particular good grades in English and Maths. Employers also encourage their clerical staff to gain NVQs in Business Administration.

What attributes are needed?

Strong reading and writing skills, including good grammar and spelling is imperative. You&ll also need to be computer literate and a confident communicator. Flexibility along with attention to detail is also important.
