Admin Assistant

You would be responsible for the smooth running of an office in an admin assistant role. This involves overseeing paperwork, answering the telephone and several other tasks to make an office function effectively.

Who can I work for?

Most offices have an admin assistant, whether a freelancer or one located in the office, so there are plenty of admin assistant roles around.

Where and when can I work?

You could work in many different types of businesses- any business that has admin to be completed. Hours are typically 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.

What can I earn?

Dependent on the company and location, salaries start between £13,000 and £19,000, increasing with experience to £27,000. Bonuses can come with extra responsibility, such as being a fire safety officer.

What are the benefits?

All offices have or need an administrator. This means there are plenty of posts up for grabs. A major benefit when working in this role is being at the hub of a team atmosphere. You will get to know most or all the staff, since all routes pass through the administrator- all staff will need your help at some stage.

Are there chances of promotion?

Some administrators work their way up the company to become secretaries and personal assistants. Some firms will sponsor you to take exams such as the RSA, which you may need in order to be deemed suitable for an admin assistant role.

What will I be responsible for?

Your responsibilities are guaranteed to be varied, and are likely to include opening and sending the post; filing; photocopying; faxing; stationary; arranging transport and accommodation for colleagues; typing letters; sorting emails; updating contacts books; answering the telephone.

What qualifications do I need?

Some firms set spelling and grammar tests, but this is dependent on the office you work in – obviously, an accounts department would plump for people more numerate, whilst publishing houses would go for those more literate. A few GCSEs, especially English and maths would be beneficial, and an RSA qualification could give you the edge over other candidates who don't have one.

Do I need any experience?

Training is usually on-the-job but those with experience would score over those without.
