Maintenance Electrician

Maintenance electricians are responsible for ensuring all electrical equipment and power systems within a residential or commercial property are operating properly.

Who can I work for?

You can work for electrical contractors, maintenance firms and construction companies. You might also be employed privately to oversee maintenance of the electrical equipment within a company or block of flats.

Where and when can I work?

You will be mostly site-based and generally work a 40-hour week, but as a job cannot be left unfinished you will occasionally work overtime. You may also have to work evenings or weekends to minimise disruption to others.

What can I earn?

Newly-qualified electricians can earn up to £20,000 a year. With just a few years' experience this rises to between £30,000 and £40,000.

What are the benefits?

There's a high demand for electricians in the UK so there's excellent job security in this role. It's also very versatile and your skills can be transferred across a range of industries.

Are there chances of promotion?

Many electricians are self-employed so there is plenty of opportunity to start your own business. In larger companies, you can move into management to become a team leader or supervisor.

What will I be responsible for?

Whenever electrical equipment breaks down or needs repair, you are responsible for fixing it. This can include repairing circuit breakers, replacing old switches, tracking down electrical shorts and generally ensuring the electrical systems of any building or equipment is working safely. You might also inspect and test electrical systems.

Do I need any experience?

You can become a maintenance electrician via an apprenticeship scheme. These are aimed candidates aged 25 or under, and take four years to complete. It involves theory-based learning as well as practical on-the-job training.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be practical and good at following instructions plus have a keen eye for detail. You will also need stamina as you could be standing for long periods of time or working in cramped conditions.
