Electrician Mate

An electrician's mate is a 'helping hand' for electricians on site. They do not have any formal training but can undertake minor jobs to make an electrician's job easier. They may be considering working as an electrician or gaining work experience before applying to train as one.

Who can I work for?

You can work independent electricians, electrical contractors or maintenance firms.

Where and when can I work?

Electricians often work odd and long hours and you will need to make yourself available for emergency call-outs too. A lot of the work is undertaken on short-term contracts to cover extra workloads.

What can I earn?

It's entirely dependent on your employer and the type of work you are doing. You might be paid hourly or weekly, depending on the length of the contract. Electrician's mates must be over 18 and therefore are entitled to the National Minimum Wage.

What are the benefits?

It's the perfect place to start your career as an electrician, and helps you to gain a place on an apprenticeship scheme. If you work hard enough you might impress a potential future boss, landing you a job as soon as you qualify.

Are there chances of promotion?

To become an electrician you will have to undertake some kind of formal training and become an apprentice first. Progressing into the trade through working as an electrician's mate alone is rare.

What will I be responsible for?

You are there to provide extra help to the electrician, or in some cases, a team of electricians. This involves undertaking the manual jobs such as fetching and carrying equipment, picking up supplies, helping to lay out cable and assisting when the electrician is working at heights or in cramped conditions.

Do I need any experience?

Typically, you do not need any formal qualifications to be an electrician's mate but some companies ask for formal training. Experience on site is beneficial and you might also have worked as a joiners mate or plumbers mate in the past.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be tenacious, upbeat and keen to learn. You will have to be able to take instruction and perform menial tasks with enthusiasm. You will also need stamina for carrying heavy equipment and loading and unloading tools from the van.
