Electrician Apprentice

An apprentice electrician assists qualified electricians with the view of becoming an electrician themselves. They help with installation, repairs and maintenance of electrical systems in residential properties and businesses.

Who can I work for?

You can work for an independent electrician or within a private firm of electricians.

Where and when can I work?

Apprenticeships are available nationwide and you must be prepared to work long and odd hours, and often be on call to help an electrician in emergency situations. As an apprentice you will also be required to do one day a week in the classroom and home-based learning too.

What can I earn?

Research has found that apprentices earn an average of £170 per week but it depends entirely on your location, your age and your employer. You wage will usually rise in line with your level of experience.

What are the benefits?

The major benefit is on-the-job training, which will provide you with invaluable skills and experience in a real-life setting. You can also 'earn while you learn'.

Are there chances of promotion?

An apprenticeship is the perfect starting point for a career as a fully qualified electrician. From here, you can go on to specialise in maintenance electrics or installation electrics. You can eventually start your own business or work your way up to management in a private electricians firm.

What will I be responsible for?

You will perform duties such as wiring outlets, connecting circuits and breakers, replacing fuses and fuse boxes.

Do I need any experience?

The idea of an apprenticeship is to give you all the experience you need to go into the role on a permanent basis. A keen interest in the area is beneficial though.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be extremely enthusiastic with a 'can-do' attitude. You should be able to take direction, work under instruction and be prepared to undertake minor tasks in the interests of learning every part of the trade.
