Tutor

A tutor works with small groups and individual students to help them in specific subjects that they may need extra support with or to improve in. They do not just teach, they provide students with study skills and good study habits to make their learning process easier.

Who can I work for?

Many tutors are self-employed and will work on a freelance or consultancy basis within schools and colleges. They also work with individual students at their homes.

Where and when can I work?

Positions are available nationwide. If you are working in an educational environment you will most likely work school hours of 9am – 3.30pm. If you are a private tutor you may be required to provide sessions before and after school, so this could mean early mornings, evenings and weekend work.

What can I earn?

Many tutors are paid hourly or by the day so your earnings will depend entirely on how many ‘clients' you have. The average salary, however, is about £25,000.

What are the benefits?

The work is extremely flexible so you can fit your hours around any other commitments. Working with students on a one-to-one basis means you will be able to tailor your teaching styles and methods, giving you greater freedom in the role.

Are there chances of promotion?

There is no defined career structure for a tutor, as you will mostly be working independently. Promotion might mean a move into permanent, full-time employment.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be responsible for developing, supporting and assisting students in a particular area of learning including creating bespoke session plans, undertaking regular progress checks, giving feedback to the student and their school or parents, and helping with preparing a student for exams at school, college or university.

Do I need any experience?

You will need a level of expertise in the subject that you are tutoring in. For example, you may be an author who tutors in English, or a laboratory assistant who tutors in science. Some teaching experience or a qualification is also advantageous to be able to provide the best learning environment for the student(s).

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be motivational, encouraging, enthusiastic and keen to develop your own skills as a tutor as well as the learning of your students. You should be a clear, concise and considerate communicator and have empathy in order to engage with your students.
