more details >A teacher develops schemes of work and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives, depending on the age, ability and aptitude of their students. This could be in primary school or a secondary school.
You can work in a primary school, teaching children aged between four to 11, or in a secondary school, teaching children aged from 11 up to 18. This could be in mainstream or private education.
You will mostly be based in a classroom and will be teaching between the hours of 9am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday. However, extra curricular activities, lesson planning, staff meetings and parents' evenings means you will be occasionally required to work outside of school hours.
Newly qualified teachers can expect to earn £21,000, rising incrementally to £30,000. With experience, you can apply to go onto an upper pay scale earning up to £36,000.
You will get up to 12 weeks a year away from the classroom so can enjoy long summer and seasonal breaks. The role is also extremely rewarding and has excellent potential for career progression.
Career progression may be through a specialist curriculum role, or by moving into management. You can become head of your specialist subject or move into a different role such as special educational needs.
Typical responsibilities include teaching all areas of the primary curriculum and teaching specialist areas of the secondary system; creating a positive learning environment; planning, preparing and presenting lessons; marking, assessing and recording students' work; providing feedback to parents on a pupil's progress; and taking part in school events and activities. This is amongst other administrative duties too.
Unless your degree is a Bachelor of Education or BA/BSc with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), it is essential to gain QTS – most teachers get this through undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Primary school teachers need to show an aptitude for English, science and maths and secondary school teachers should have experience in their specific subject area. Needless to say, classroom experience is essential.
You will need to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal abilities plus have good organisational and time-management skills. Enthusiasm, patience and motivation are key to engaging students and you will need to keep an open mind and sense of humour when working with children.
