Trainee Construction

As a trainee in the construction industry, you will gain valuable work experience, skills and qualifications to prepare you for your future career in construction.

Who can I work for?

Apprenticeships and trainee schemes exist in various disciplines including carpentry, plumbing, plastering, bricklaying and electrical training, amongst other things.

Where and when can I work?

In general, you will gain experience on site and work a standard 40-hour week, Monday to Friday. You might be expected to undertake training in college, in the office or at home and complete assignments out of hours during your placement.

What can I earn?

It will vary on what area you choose to undertake training in and where you are based in the country, but you can look to earn around £10,000 in your first year as an apprentice. This will then rise with experience and qualifications.

What are the benefits?

A clear benefit is on-the-job training, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your job and learn new skills and experiences quickly.

Are there chances of promotion?

Once you are qualified, the options are limitless. You can go on to specialise in your field on any kind of building project and, with further qualifications and the right amount of experience, you can eventually move into managerial and supervisory roles.

What will I be responsible for?

You will normally work alongside experienced professionals, assisting them and learning from them in practical situations. You may also be expected to attend college one day a week for classroom learning.

Do I need any experience?

Apprenticeships and trainee schemes are designed to give you the experience and skills needed for an entry-level position in the construction industry. However a basic knowledge of how a construction site functions and a keen interest in the area you choose to study is beneficial. Employers will also look for good GCSE grades.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be practical, enthusiastic, flexible and tenacious. You must also be positive, be able to use your initiative and happy to tackle mundane tasks with a smile!
