Labourer

Labourers usually undertake physical, manual work that includes digging trenches, laying foundations, building walls, fitting windows, plastering and carpentry duties for the construction trade.

Who can I work for?

You will usually be employed in the construction industry, either as an independent contractor or working directly for a builder or developer.

Where and when can I work?

You will be based on site with very little time spent in an office, if any at all. This means working outside and completing a job, whatever the weather. The work is usually dependent on the light so this can often mean early starts and early finishes.

What can I earn?

Labourers are usually paid by the hour or week; however, a starting salary is around £15,000. On average, labourers earn £18,000 rising to around £25,000 with qualifications and experience.

What are the benefits?

It is a physical job, but you will spend a lot of time outdoors, often with an early finish.

Are there chances of promotion?

As a labourer, your prospects are very good. Most go on to become site supervisors or managers. There is also the opportunity to become a trainer at college or supervise an apprenticeship scheme.

What will I be responsible for?

Planning and updating schedules of work, completing invoices for the employer, recording tally sheets and making logbook entries to keep track of what occurs on site. Also ordering equipment to be used on site, taking measurements and performing calculations for material and manual labour in a number of disciplines from carpentry to plastering and digging.

Do I need any experience?

Most labourers learn their trade through an apprenticeship and will have good GCSEs – usually in maths, english and design and technology. To get on to an apprenticeship most employers request some kind of work experience. Alternatively college courses are available, offering Edexcel First Diploma in Construction, the City & Guilds Basic Skills in Construction award and the Intermediate/Advanced Construction Award.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be highly organised, with good problem-solving skills and basic numeracy and literacy. You will need an awareness of safety issues, as well as the ability to work well within a team and with minimal supervision. Strong communication skills are also essential, as you will be liaising with people at all levels in the industry.
