Sales Admin

You will be called upon to meet sales targets and increase your company's profits. You will need an intimate knowledge of your product to sell to clients with workplaces shared between the office and on the road.

Who can I work for?

A diverse range of companies, ranging from engineering, medical, electronics, pharmaceutical and clothing, etc. They all know it's no good having the right product if you've got no-one to sell it.

Where and when can I work?

Sometimes you may be expected to travel anywhere in the UK or even abroad. Being a sales rep is not a 9-to-5 job. But you will work a typical 40-hour week.

What can I earn?

Sales reps start at around £20,000. Experience and good performance can raise this to £40-60,000. Seniors with increased management positions can reach £90,000.

What are the benefits?

A company car is usually provided to reflect the frequent travel needed to attend meetings. You should also be provided with a laptop and mobile phone. Many basic salaries are supplemented with commission. A sales target bonus may also be agreed.

Are there chances of promotion?

Senior management posts or a switch into marketing are common paths trodden by sales rep. Armed with the relevant experience, you may even start your own business.

What will I be responsible for?

Meeting your sales target for the year by keeping current customers satisfied to maintain existing accounts, at the same time seeking new business. You may also be asked to attend conferences or training events to increase your product knowledge or even give presentations yourself for other reps' benefit.

What qualifications do I need?

These vary upon the industry you're in. Specialist knowledge may require a degree in the relevant field. Usually, though, aptitude is valued above degree qualifications.

Do I need any experience?

No. Sales experience is an advantage but not an essential. Proving you have the capacity to learn fast and do the job well is far more important.

What attributes are needed?

Smart appearance, personality, good inter-personal skills. Ability to drive. Good with figures.
