Paralegal

Paralegals are employed by law firms or in-house corporate legal teams to perform practical legal work that requires knowledge of the law and procedures. They are not qualified to practice as a solicitor or barrister.

Who can I work for?

Paralegals may work for solicitors within the legal profession or work within a legal environment within the public sector, commerce or industry.

Where and when can I work?

Most paralegal professionals are contracted to work normal office hours, so 9am – 5pm. However, from time-to-time you may be required to work longer hours to visit clients, attend court proceedings or undertake specialist research.

What can I earn?

There are a number of factors that can affect salaries including location, the area of practice and the size and type of employer. Typical salaries are between £12,000 – £30,000 for those with less than five years' experience; and between £30,000 – £65,000 for those with more.

What are the benefits?

Sociable hours and generous holiday are complemented with the opportunity to learn, develop and progress, especially within larger firms.

Are there chances of promotion?

Progression is based on experience, performance and qualifications. Paralegals can take up additional learning to secure a traineeship to qualify as a solicitor, barrister or legal executive.

What will I be responsible for?

Everything from back-office management and clerical duties to researching and assembling relevant material for your employer's cases.

Paralegals prepare case documentation, transcribe legal opinions, statements, pull together case dockets, attend court proceedings, build contacts within the judicial system and the legal fraternity, and keep up-to-date on legislative, regulatory and industry-related developments, changes and trends.

Do I need any experience?

A relevant professional qualification is required, or a strong academic background with a law firm in a similar position. Employment prospects are better for candidates with academic qualifications in accounting, law, finance, business or any other related disciplines.

Relevant qualifications are offered by professional associations, such as the Institute of Paralegals (IOP), Paralegal Distance Learning and the National Association of Licensed Paralegals (NALP).

What attributes are needed?

The ability to multi-task and work under pressure is vital. Paralegals need strong verbal and written communication skills, a creative, logical and analytical way of thinking, a positive attitude and the ability to work in teams.
