Class 2 Driver

Lorry drivers are responsible for the safe delivery of goods nationally or internationally.

Who can I work for?

You could work for a manufacturer, distributor or road haulage firm.

Where and when can I work?

Opportunities are available across the country and overseas too. By law, drivers can only work 48 hours per week, and can't spend more than nine hours per day on the road.

What can I earn?

Newly qualified drivers start off at about £14,000. This can increase to £35,000 per year with experience.

What are the benefits?

The job is ideal for people that don't want to be stuck in an office all day as you will be driving and exploring the country for work.

Are there chances of promotion?

With experience and by gaining the correct licenses, you can drive bigger loads and further distances. With the right training and background you can progress to operations manager or distribution manager.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be responsible for ensuring goods are safely secured and delivered, loading and unloading the vehicle, planning and driving you route and keeping your lorry in good and clean condition.

Do I need any experience?

Firstly you will need a clean driving license and you are required to pass a medical test to work as a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) driver.

You'll also need an LGV license in categories C (smaller, rigid vehicles) or C+E (larger, articulated vehicles) and to hold a Certificate of Professional Competence. This involves taking a practical and theory test taken every five years.

What attributes are needed?

You must be comfortable spending long hours on the road alone and self-motivated in order to get the job done by yourself. Extensive experience of long-distance driving is also beneficial as are basic vehicle maintenance skills.
