Bus drivers transport passengers from one place to another in a Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV). They are responsible for their passengers' comfort and safety throughout the journey.
Who can I work for?
You can work for local authorities, for transport companies and contractors, travel agents or private companies that require transport at a specific site, such as at an airport.
Where and when can I work?
You will usually work to a schedule and hours and times will vary on what role you take. For example, a school bus driver will work completely different hours to a tour bus driver. There are job opportunities across the country.
What can I earn?
Salary depends on your location and what sector you work in but the average wage of a bus driver is £23,000.
What are the benefits?
The work is very sociable and flexible too, if you choose. There's also the chance to travel if you drive for a travel agency or tour company.
Are there chances of promotion?
Opportunities are limited however you can go on to become a supervisor or dispatch manager. You could move into fleet management too.
What will I be responsible for?
Your main concern is the safety and comfort of your passengers, and getting them to and from their destinations on time. Different driving jobs bring different responsibilities – for example a public transport bus driver is responsible for taking passenger's fares. You might also be responsible for the upkeep of the vehicle and its parts in some roles.
Do I need any experience?
Bus drivers require a special PCV licence. This requires you to have a full UK driving licence first and you must have a clean driving history. A good standard of education is also beneficial.
What attributes are needed?
You will need to be punctual, calm, polite and friendly with excellent verbal communication skills. You will also need to show you are responsible and reliable and have an aptitude for geography and driving routes.
