Warehouse Assistant

You'll be an integral cog in the supply chain process.

Who can I work for?

Employers are twofold. One, logistics or distribution specialists such as Bibby, who operate warehouses on behalf of firms who have outsourced this part of the business. Two, manufacturing or retail businesses that employ warehouse staff in their own workplace rather than outsourcing, ie, Tesco.

Where and when can I work?

Flitting between the warehouse and the office, with the occasional overnight or overseas stay. Shift work is the norm in logistics, with some warehouses operating 24/7, with anti-social hours expected

What can I earn?

Between £36-£60,000-plus a year with experience. Starting salaries for graduate entrants vary from £15,656-£30,716.

What are the benefits?

There are so many warehouses now springing up and down the length and breadth of the UK that finding a job if you're suitably qualified should not be too much of a problem, even in today's economic climate. Belonging and being responsible for a close-knit team. You may get a package that includes a range of benefits, such as company car, staff discount, pension, life insurance and/or private health insurance. Many warehouses are easy to get to, being, as most of them are, close to motorways and rail connections.

Are there chances of promotion?

Experienced warehouse managers can move into other management posts through the wider logistics supply chain sector. Or you may wish to use your supply chain management skills in related sectors, such as manaufacturing or retailing. There are also opprtunities in Europe and other emerging global marketrs.

What will I be responsible for?

+ For health and safety regulations being adhered to – including staff training – and updating staff on all the latest recommendations from the HSE

+ Overseeing the efficient receipt, storage and dispatch of all manner of goods, from food to manufacturing parts, from clothing to gifts

+ Managing people, processes and systems

+ Ensuring productivity targets are met

+ Maintaining computerised administration and automated storage and retrieval systems

+ Overseeing picking, packing and distribution activity

+ Managing worker teams and dealing with personnel issues such as staff training, recruitment and discipline

+ Keeping stock control systems updated

+ Liaising with customers, suppliers and transport firms

+ Overseeing maintenance of machinery, equipment and vehicles

+ Planning future capacity requirements

What qualifications do I need?

These posts are open to all graduates – you could enhance your chances, however, by choosing something in transport, distribution or logistics. Or you may choose foundation degrees in logistics and supply chain management. You can find out more from The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) UK. Many warehouse managers, however, would have worked their way up from warehouse assistants. And they can study for the requisite qualifications as they go along.

Do I need any experience?

See above. But also it will be beneficial to show you have experience of team leading, and a foreign language would be a bonus in today's global economy.

What attributes are needed?

Good communications skills, patience and organisational abilities. A degree of physical strength in case you need to roll up your sleeves yourself – especially in smaller concerns – in times of heavy workload. A comprehensive grasp of health and safety legislature is a must to minimise the risk of accidents to colleagues. Attention to detail, abilities in snap judgements, spatial awareness and mental arithmetic are essential. Conscientiousness a given.
