Health Manager

A health service manager can work across a variety of roles including finance, human resources, clinical management, facilities management, and operational management.

Who can I work for?

You could work for the National Health Service, including GPs, dentists and hospitals, and within the private healthcare sector too.

Where and when can I work?

You will typically work Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm and will be based in an office within the establishment you are working for. Overtime may sometimes be required in certain roles, so you will be expected to be flexible.

What can I earn?

A starting salary for a manager on the NHS Graduate Management Scheme is about £22,000. You can then look to earn between £27,000 and £40,000 and those in senior management positions earn in excess of £90,000.

What are the benefits?

The NHS believes in a good work-life balance and so flexi-time, job shares and career breaks are possible.

Are there chances of promotion?

Managers who have undertaken the graduate management training and are in their first role are usually promoted rapidly. Successful managers can go into director or chief executive roles within 10 to 15 years.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be responsible for managing the cost, delivery and quality of healthcare services. This includes implementing new budgets, systems and policies, managing teams and departments and overseeing the day-to-day management of an organisation, a specific unit or a service area.

Do I need any experience?

In order to get on to the NHS Graduate Management Scheme you will need a 2:2 degree in any subject. If you are looking to work within a particular area such as IT, HR, health or people management, you will need a degree in a relevant subject. You can also apply to the training if you have extensive experience within the NHS in other roles, and meet the basic criteria.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to have excellent communication, leadership and time management skills. You should also demonstrate initiative and problem-solving abilities plus be able to cope well under pressure and stress to meet deadlines and targets and motivate others to do the same.
