Graduate Trainee

Many people start their careers on graduate trainee programmes. They are offered in a variety of roles across a vast range of sectors, from IT and finance through to retail and construction.

Who can I work for?

Employers in all industries across the UK offer graduate training programmes. These could be local businesses looking to train an individual or large corporations that run schemes for a number of graduates.

Where and when can I work?

It depends on the industry that you are training in and your employer. For example, those on graduate programmes in the leisure industry might have to work evenings and weekends. Those in construction could find themselves working on a building site from early in the morning and office-based trainees might only work Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm.

What can I earn?

The average salary for a graduate trainee is £25,000 but this varies greatly depending on the sector your work in. A graduate trainee in a management consultancy can earn as high as £37,500 whereas a graduate trainee working in hospitality will earn about £17,000.

What are the benefits?

Learning a skill, trade or industry through a graduate trainee programme is a great way to start your career. You will be able to ‘earn while you learn’ – having the responsibility of a career along with the guidance of senior colleagues.

Are there chances of promotion?

Yes – once you have successfully completed your training you could be offered a permanent role in the same, or a similar, position. From there you can go on to work your way up through the ranks to management and even director level.

What will I be responsible for?

You will be responsible for all the day-to-day tasks that come with the role you are training for while also undertaking on-the-job training and, sometimes, home-based learning too. If you are a management graduate trainee you might be responsible for other staff members too.

Do I need any experience?

You should have a degree in a subject relevant to the trainee programme you have applied for. For example, journalism trainees should have a relevant media degree and accountancy trainees should have a relevant financial planning or maths degree. Previous experience within the industry you are training in is desirable.

What attributes are needed?

You will need to be positive, enthusiastic, motivated and professional. You should be willing to learn and listen to constructive criticism and keen to progress you career within your chosen industry. In general, excellent communication and strong commercial awareness skills are also beneficial.
