You could be employed in a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, transport, construction, engineering and telecommunications.
You may be working from a production plant, workshop, office, factory or on site and the hours are job specific. You might be required to work unsocial hours in order to work safely and with minimal disruption to others.
Starting salaries range between £20,000 and £25,000. Experienced or engineers can earn up to £38,000.
There are good opportunities for working abroad, especially in large consulting firms and large building contractors.
You can become a chartered engineer of apply for incorporated status. This will greatly improve your position and salary. After numerous years of experience, many engineers progress into project management or become a consultant or contractor.
You are likely to be involved in a project from its initial conception through to completion. This can include meeting a client, developing ideas and designing the concept, building the electronics system, overseeing its installation and undertaking any maintenance work associated with it.
Most candidates have a degree in electrical or electronic engineering and enthusiasm to gain professional status. Relevant industrial experience is highly beneficial.
You will need to demonstrate commercial awareness and an enthusiasm for the role. You will need to be highly organised and have excellent verbal and written communications skills plus the ability to work in a team.
