Job Description

GHS (UK) is a Swindon-based managed IT services business supporting commercial organisations, schools and multi-site customers. Our work covers managed IT support, Microsoft 365, cloud services, cybersecurity, networking, servers, backup, telephony and onsite support. The Helpdesk works closely with our Field, Project and Senior Engineering teams, giving an apprentice valuable exposure to a broad range of customers and technologies.

As an IT Apprentice at GHS you will begin with structured, process-led tasks such as building and preparing computers, installing approved software, handling equipment, and creating, changing or removing user accounts. As your knowledge, confidence and reliability grow, you will progress into first-line support, Microsoft 365 administration, troubleshooting, customer communication, monitoring and onsite work.

Responsibilities

  • Build, configure and quality-check laptops and desktop computers using documented GHS processes.
  • Install Windows updates, approved applications, security software and standard customer configurations.
  • Create, amend and disable user accounts, email accounts and access permissions by following authorised requests and checklists.
  • Prepare equipment for customers, including asset recording, labelling, packing and checking accessories.
  • Assist with goods in and goods out, stock control and the organisation of workshop and build areas.
  • Keep accurate records of work completed, including clear ticket notes, build sheets, time entries and final checks.
  • Carry out password resets and other low-risk, process-led administration under supervision.
  • Learn how to identify information safely, follow security procedures and protect customer data.
  • Ask for help early and escal… anything outside your training, authority or experience.
  • You will progress into more complex responsibilities as your apprenticeship progresses.

What we are looking for

  • A genuine interest in IT, computers and learning how technology works.
  • A practical, methodical approach and the patience to follow documented processes carefully.
  • Good attention to detail, especially when handling customer equipment, accounts, access and records.
  • Clear and friendly communication, with the confidence to speak to colleagues and customers professionally.
  • Good organisation, reliability and the ability to complete tasks rather than leave them unfinished.
  • A willingness to accept feedback, learn from mistakes and ask questions when unsure.
  • A responsible attitude towards cybersecurity, confidentiality and customer data.
  • The ability to work well as part of a team and support others during busy periods.
  • A UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. This is preferred for future onsite development but is not required for initial workshop-based duties.

Most important

We are not expecting a finished technician. We are looking for the right attitude, care, curiosity and commitment to develop.

Entry requirements

  • 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above)
  • Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship is in a similar subject

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.

If you hold international equivalents of the above qualifications, at the time of your application you must be able to provide an official document that states how your international qualifications compare to the UK qualifications.

For more information please visit the UK ENIC website.

Working hours

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm (30 minute lunch break).

Benefits

  • Company pension scheme, subject to eligibility.
  • Free onsite parking.
  • Paid holiday entitlement.
  • Company events and a friendly, supportive team environment.
  • Practical exposure to a broad range of customers, technologies and career paths across an established IT services business.

90% of QA apprentices secure permanent employment after completing: this is 20% higher than the national average.
