Design Engineer£40,000 Basic SalaryLichfieldExperience & QualificationsOur client is looking for someone with demonstrable experience in a design engineering or product development role. While a degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design or a related discipline is preferred, relevant hands-on experience may be considered.Preferred (not required):Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design or a related engineering disciplineProficiency in 3D CAD modelling is essential (SolidWorks preferred)Experience taking products from concept through to manufactureExperience of working to BS/ISO or equivalent industry standards desirable but not essentialPurpose of RoleThe role is responsible for providing technical services, design, drawing and modelling product range. You will develop 3D models and 2D drawings to appropriate requirements and standards, carry out analysis of existing designs, and evolve products in line with business priorities.You will also visit and support suppliers, aiding the introduction and ongoing manufacture of products, and working with international colleagues and suppliers where required.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign & TechnicalProvide technical services in line with the technical handbook and agreed design protocols, including:Conducting competitor analysis and understanding product service conditionsDeveloping new designs and evolving existing ones based on analysis and field knowledgeUsing industry-standard tools: solid 3D modelling, rendering, 2D engineering drawings, FEA analysis and standard Microsoft Office toolsCarrying out design checking when requestedDeveloping quality requirements and process improvementsSupporting the wider Technical team in articulating product benefitsProviding abstracts for trade literature, website and tender documentationMaintaining a well-structured and accessible library of product data as a shared business resourceArrange and coordinate design reviews with the Engineering Manager and wider team as requiredManage assigned projects, including supporting product introductions and approving first-off samples before handover to the operations teamSupplier & FoundryVisit suppliers and foundries as required to resolve design or manufacturability issues during product introduction or productionAssist local engineers with the design of patterns, core boxes and mouldsReport design-related problems identified during supplier visits, with suggested solutionsCommunication & CollaborationWork to deadlines set by the Engineering Manager; communicate proactively if delivery is at riskCommunicate fully, clearly and promptly on:Any queries relating to requested workThe status of projectsChanging situations or factors affecting suppliersProduce project status reports as required to inform financial, sales and operational planningWith reasonable notice and in line with the company handbook, be available outside office hours to communicate with international colleagues in other time zonesTake and make opportunities to collaborate, network and strengthen relationships with colleagues, suppliers, customers and industry partnersProvide technical presentations and participate in customer design reviews when requiredAll meetings to have agendas and action points setEngage with all company communication platforms (e.g. SharePoint)GeneralObserve Products company and Health & Safety handbooks at all timesWork diligently and use time effectively, in line with prioritiesProactively suggest improvements and developments to products, services and processes; use initiative to identify future opportunities and carry out preliminary feasibility investigationsMentor and support more junior members of the team as requiredUndertake duties other than those specifically listed where reasonably requiredJBRP1_UKTJ
