Working Pattern: 3 days on-site in Telford / 2 days working from home

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Electronics Design Engineer – £58,500 | Hybrid

Starkey Recruitment Group is recruiting for an experienced Electronics Design Engineer to join a well-established engineering and manufacturing business based in Telford.

This is an excellent opportunity for electronics engineer who enjoys taking genuine technical ownership of products rather than focusing on one small element of the design process.

You will be responsible for the electronic content of products throughout the full product lifecycle, covering system architecture, circuit design, integration, testing, production introduction and ongoing product support.

Working closely with mechanical design, firmware, production and purchasing teams, you will play a key role in ensuring products are reliable, manufacturable, testable and practical for their intended application.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Defining electronic system architecture from incomplete or evolving requirements
  • Designing analogue and digital circuits, including control, power and communications
  • Designing circuits from first principles
  • Producing and reviewing schematics, PCB layouts and technical documentation
  • Selecting components based on performance, robustness and long-term availability
  • Considering thermal management and EMC compliance within PCB design
  • Supporting prototype build, bring-up, debugging, testing and design iteration
  • Taking designs through validation and into production
  • Managing technical timescales across multiple concurrent development projects
  • Identifying technical risks and potential failure modes at an early stage
  • Balancing performance, cost, manufacturability and reliability
  • Writing simple firmware for prototyping, testing and diagnostic purposes

Product Lifecycle & Continuous Improvement

Your involvement won’t stop once a product reaches production. You’ll also take responsibility for supporting products throughout their lifecycle, including:

  • Maintaining and improving existing electronic designs
  • Managing component obsolescence
  • Redesigning products where components become unavailable
  • Supporting continuity of supply
  • Identifying suitable alternative components and technologies
  • Improving existing products as technology develops

Testing, Compliance & Quality

You will ensure electronic designs meet appropriate regulatory, safety, EMC and reliability requirements.

This will include defining and carrying out appropriate product testing, maintaining traceability of key design decisions and producing documentation suitable for peer review and audit.

You’ll also fulfil the electronics engineering responsibilities required within the product technical file.

The emphasis is firmly on creating products that are robust and dependable. Problems should be properly understood and engineered out rather than simply worked around.

Working as Part of the Engineering Team

Collaboration will be an important part of the role.

You’ll work closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, production and purchasing teams to make sure designs are practical to manufacture, test and support.

You’ll also engage with suppliers and external technical specialists when required, while retaining ownership of the overall electronic solution.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an Electronics Design Engineer with strong practical engineering judgement and experience across areas such as:

  • Analogue and digital electronic circuit design
  • Electronic system architecture
  • PCB design and layout
  • EMC and thermal considerations
  • Component selection
  • Prototype development and debugging
  • Testing and validation
  • Design for manufacture
  • Product lifecycle and obsolescence management
  • Technical documentation
  • Working within regulatory and quality requirements
  • Experience of writing basic firmware for prototyping or diagnostics would also be advantageous.

Just as importantly, you’ll be comfortable working with requirements that may not always be fully defined at the outset. You’ll be expected to investigate, challenge and develop practical solutions rather than waiting for every detail to be provided.

The Engineering Approach

The business has a clear philosophy when it comes to product development:

  • Reliability and robustness come first.
  • Designs should be buildable, testable and supportable, tolerate real-world variation and use components with dependable supply chains wherever possible.
  • The aim is to develop straightforward engineering solutions that solve the problem properly without introducing unnecessary complexity or features.
