Shift Engineer

Job Description

About Us:
Victory Services Club (VSC) is a successful charity which provides membership services to serving & retired members of the UK Armed Forces, NATO, Commonwealth, and their families. The Club, which is close to Marble Arch, has 200 bedrooms, extensive dining facilities, and seven Event Rooms which are available for Club members. Our Event Rooms are hired to generate revenue for the charity. The Club operates a number of schemes to provide free breaks for serving members of the Armed Forces.
Primary Role:
The Shift Engineer / Duty Technician is responsible for carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across a busy Military Private Club environment comprising 196 bedrooms, 7 meeting rooms, 2 kitchens, restaurant and bar areas, public areas, offices, plant rooms and back- of-house facilities. The role supports the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the building, responding promptly to guests, members, staff and operational maintenance needs while maintaining high standards of presentation, service and health and safety. The postholder will work as part of the Facilities and Maintenance team, liaising with Club operations, contractors and managers to minimise disruption and ensure excellent service delivery.
Specific Tasks:
Carry out daily shift duties, maintenance checks and repairs across guest bedrooms,
meeting rooms, kitchens, restaurant, bar, public areas and back-of-house areas.
Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests from guests, members, staff
and managers, prioritising urgent issues that affect safety, comfort or business operations.
Carry out basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, decoration, fabric repairs and general
building maintenance within competence and in line with safe working practices.
Monitor and support the operation of mechanical and electrical plant, including HVAC
systems, boilers, pumps, ventilation, lighting, drainage and water systems.
Assist with planned preventative maintenance tasks, statutory checks and routine
inspections, ensuring accurate records are completed where required.
Support kitchen and catering operations by responding to maintenance issues affecting the
two kitchens, restaurant and bar, escalating specialist equipment faults to approved
contractors where required.
Carry out bedroom maintenance checks and repairs to support occupancy, guest
satisfaction and room readiness.
Identify defects, hazards or areas requiring improvement and report them to the Facilities
Manager.
Liaise with and escort contractors as required, ensuring site rules, permits, safeguarding
and health and safety requirements are followed.
Maintain workshop, plant rooms and storage areas in a clean, safe and organised
condition.
Use maintenance reporting systems, handover notes, emails and records accurately to
communicate completed work, outstanding tasks and follow-up requirements.
Participate in emergency response procedures, including fire alarm activations, leaks,
power issues, equipment failures and other building incidents.
Undertake any other reasonable maintenance duties required to support the smooth
running of the property.
Resources:
Work hours: 40 hours per week, working shifts of 4 days on and 4 days off from 7am to 7pm
across the 7 days of the week.
The postholder will be provided with appropriate tools, equipment, personal protective equipment
and access to maintenance systems required to perform the role safely and effectively. Training
will be provided where required for site systems, emergency procedures, compliance requirements
and safe working practices.
Health & Safety and Environment:
Comply with all health and safety, fire safety, food safety, environmental and company
policies and procedures at all times.
Work safely in guest, member, staff, kitchen, plant and public areas, taking appropriate
steps to minimise disruption and protect building users.
Use correct personal protective equipment and follow safe systems of work, risk
assessments, method statements and permit-to-work procedures where applicable.
Report accidents, near misses, hazards, defects and unsafe conditions promptly to the
Facilities Manage.
Support statutory compliance activities including fire safety checks, water hygiene checks,
emergency lighting checks, plant inspections and contractor compliance records as
required.
Promote good environmental practice by reducing energy waste, reporting leaks,
supporting efficient plant operation and disposing of materials responsibly.
Ensure maintenance work areas are left clean, tidy and safe on completion of tasks.
Previous Experience:
Essential:
Good knowledge and understanding of general maintenance tasks in a busy operational
environment.
HVAC maintenance-led experience.
Electrical or plumbing experience and practical working knowledge.
Experience using hand tools and basic maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
Excellent communication skills and a professional, service-focused approach.
Ability to prioritise tasks, work independently on shift and escalate issues appropriately.
Good understanding of health and safety requirements in maintenance work.
Desirable:
Maintenance experience in a hotel, club, hospitality, leisure or tourism environment.
Experience supporting bedrooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, restaurant and bar operations.
Experience dealing with guests, members, the public and operational teams.
Experience working with and supervising third-party contractors on site.
Military experience or knowledge of the armed forces.
