DevOps Engineer

A leading public sector organisation is undergoing a major transformation of its digital and engineering capabilities. As part of this shift, they are hiring a DevOps-minded software engineer — someone who can contribute across software, infrastructure, and platform engineering.This role starts with hands-on infrastructure work: specifically, helping to clear a critical backlog of Linux upgrades alongside another engineer. But that’s just the first chapter.From there, the role evolves — depending on the person’s strengths — into either:Platform Engineering: owning infrastructure as code, containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, cloud hosting, and shaping operational best practices.This is one of the first hires into a team led by a newly appointed Head of Engineering, brought in to bring engineering in-house and modernise the tech stack. There is huge scope for influence, and the ideal candidate will be someone who sees problems and enjoys fixing them at the root.ResponsibilitiesSupport the Linux upgrade programme (short-term, critical project)Build and maintain in-house software solutions (React, Java, Python)Help establish platform engineering foundations: Kubernetes, IaC, CI/CDInfluence decisions on tooling, architecture, hosting, and best practicesContribute to a culture of engineering excellence and in-house capability buildingRequirements3–7 years of experience in software engineering, DevOps, or platform engineeringStrong Linux skills, especially around server upgrades and adminSolid scripting experience (e.g. Python, Bash)Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred), infrastructure as code, CI/CDPreference for candidates with a Computing degree or technical apprenticeshipA strong "builder" mindset – enjoys improving systems and challenging outdated practicesIdeal BackgroundThis role is particularly well-suited to candidates from commercial engineering environments (e.g. tech consultancies, betting firms, media/streaming companies) where modern infrastructure and digital engineering are the norm.
