Job Description

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the infrastructure that powers Medelic. You'll work on real-time voice processing pipelines, bi-directional EHR integrations with EMIS and SystmOne, and safety-critical systems that handle sensitive patient data.

This is a foundational role. You'll be one of the first backend engineers, working directly with our CTO to make key architectural decisions that will shape the platform for years to come. You'll own significant pieces of the system end-to-end.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build scalable, fault-tolerant backend services
  • Develop real-time voice processing pipelines with sub-second latency requirements
  • Build and maintain integrations with NHS clinical systems (EMIS, SystmOne)
  • Implement robust data pipelines for clinical information extraction
  • Ensure HIPAA/NHS DSP Toolkit compliance in everything we build
  • Participate in on-call rotation for production systems
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering culture

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience
  • Strong proficiency in Python or Go (we use both)
  • Experience with distributed systems and microservices architecture
  • Familiarity with real-time data processing (Kafka, Redis, etc.)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and data modelling for complex domains
  • Understanding of security best practices for handling sensitive data
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally

Nice to Have

  • Experience in healthcare or other regulated industries
  • Familiarity with HL7 FHIR or other healthcare interoperability standards
  • Experience with voice/audio processing systems
  • Background in ML infrastructure or model serving

Our Stack

Python, Go, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, Kubernetes, GCP, Terraform. We're pragmatic about technology choices-we use what works best for the problem at hand.

  • Equity: Meaningful equity stake in a growing company
  • Private health insurance
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays
  • £1,500 annual learning budget
  • Flexible working (hybrid or remote)
  • Enhanced parental leave
