Job Description

Learning Support Assistant

Location: Durham

Contract: Temporary, ongoing

Hours: 30 hours per week

Rate: £14.91 - £16.28 per hour including holiday pay

We are currently recruiting a Learning Support Assistant to support learners at New College Durham. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with experience supporting young people and adults with additional learning needs to make a real difference within a Further Education environment.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to provide high-quality support for learners aged 16+, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). You will help create an inclusive, supportive learning environment that enables learners to achieve their academic and personal goals.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing one-to-one and small group support to learners, including those with SEND

• Assisting learners to access, understand and engage with lessons and learning activities

• Supporting learners with personal care needs in a respectful, professional and dignified manner where required

• Encouraging learner independence, confidence and participation in the classroom

• Working collaboratively with teaching staff and support teams to promote positive learner outcomes

• Monitoring learner progress and maintaining accurate records where required

• Promoting safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times

What We're Looking For

• Experience supporting learners with SEND, ideally within a post-16 or Further Education setting

• Experience providing personal care support or willingness to undertake relevant responsibilities

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• A patient, caring and flexible approach to supporting learners

• Ability to build positive relationships with learners, staff and wider support networks

• Relevant Learning Support, SEND or Care qualification (desirable)

• Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and best practice (desirable)

• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
