IT Support Engineer

Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and customer-focused IT Support Engineer to join our team on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Based onsite in Cambridge, you will provide hands‑on technical support to end users within a business‑critical laboratory environment, ensuring IT systems, hardware, software, and peripheral devices operate efficiently and securely.

This role requires a proactive individual who can work independently while collaborating with internal IT teams, vendors, and stakeholders to support daily operations, laboratory technology, endpoint management, and ongoing IT projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, operating system, and peripheral issues.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and support desktop and laptop environments.
  • Administer and support Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM) and Microsoft Intune managed devices.
  • Perform software deployment, application packaging, and endpoint configuration activities.
  • Manage Windows patching, updates, and endpoint compliance processes.
  • Perform routine maintenance, device lifecycle management, and technology refresh activities.
  • Support hardware deployments, onboarding, office moves, and workstation setups.
  • Assist with laboratory computer connectivity and collaborate with Networking, Security, Infrastructure, and Lab IT teams.
  • Follow formal change management and change control processes within a regulated environment.
  • Respond to incidents, service requests, and escalations within agreed SLAs.
  • Maintain accurate asset management records, inventory audits, and CMDB updates.
  • Utilise PowerShell scripting to automate administrative tasks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Support local and global IT projects as required.
  • Deliver end‑user training and guidance on approved technologies and IT best practices.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, knowledge articles, and support records.
  • Ensure compliance with security, operational, and change management standards.

Skills & Experience Required

  • 6–10 years' experience in an IT Support, Desktop Support, End User Support, or Service Desk role.
  • Strong troubleshooting experience across Windows operating systems, hardware, software, and peripheral devices.
  • Experience supporting desktop, laptop, mobile, and collaboration technologies.
  • Strong experience supporting Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM).
  • Strong experience supporting Microsoft Intune.
  • Experience with software deployment, application packaging, and operating system deployment.
  • Experience managing Windows patching and update processes.
  • Working knowledge of PowerShell scripting.
  • Experience working with ITSM/ticketing systems in SLA-driven environments.
  • Knowledge of asset management, inventory control, and device lifecycle management.
  • Experience following formal change management and change control procedures.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently within an onsite support environment.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, scientific, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Experience collaborating with global IT support teams.
  • Knowledge of networking and endpoint security technologies
