Hardware Electronics Engineer

Job Description

About Level Zero

Level Zero is pioneering next-generation biosensor technology for precise, real-time monitoring of critical endocrine biomarkers. Recognised as one of the top 20 startups across all categories worldwide at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 - and backed by top-tier organisations like redalpine, SOSV and Entrepreneur First - we’re pushing the boundaries of biochemistry and nanotechnology to revolutionize personalised health.

Founded by two seasoned engineers, we bring extensive experience in R&D, technical innovation, and commercial strategy to transform the way people monitor their health. Our mission is bold: to revolutionise health management by delivering clinical-grade data directly to individuals, wherever they are.

We’re seeking driven innovators to join us in pushing the boundaries of biosensing and health tech, making personalised health monitoring a reality for everyone. To achieve this ambitious vision, we’re assembling the best team in the world - dedicated to turning cutting-edge science into life-changing, real-world solutions.

About This Role

We’re looking for a Hardware Electronics Engineer to take ownership of the electronics platform that powers our next-generation biosensor devices. Working closely with the founders and a multidisciplinary team across firmware, mechanical, optical and systems, you’ll translate product goals into robust architectures and executable development plans, taking designs from early concepts through prototypes, verification and release.

What You’ll Do

Take technical ownership of the electronics architecture for our medical device, driving development from early concept through prototype, verification and product release

Design mixed-signal electronic systems, integrating optical modules, battery management, power electronics, motor drivers, user interface electronics and supporting sensors

Design schematic capture and multi-layer PCBs, selecting appropriate components and integrating commercial modules into robust product designs

Develop and validate battery charging, power management and low-power system architectures for portable medical devices

Design interfaces for miniature cameras, LEDs, pumps, motors and user interface hardware including buttons, indicators and status LEDs

Bring up, debug and validate prototype hardware using laboratory test equipment, identifying root causes and implementing robust design improvements

Work closely with firmware, mechanical, optical and systems engineers to ensure seamless hardware integration across the product

Plan and scope electronics development activities, identifying technical risks, defining development priorities and estimating work required to achieve project milestones

Own the electronics design documentation, including schematics, design calculations, test plans, verification reports and manufacturing documentation

Lead electronics risk management activities, maintaining Design FMEAs and supporting system-level risk analysis throughout product development

Work with PCB manufacturers, assembly houses and component suppliers to support prototype builds, design for manufacture (DFM) and design for test (DFT)

Identify and establish the laboratory equipment, software tools, suppliers and development processes required to build a world-class electronics function

Contribute as a hands-on individual contributor while helping shape the future electronics capability as the team grows

What You Bring

Master's degree (or equivalent experience) in Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline. With 3-5 years' industry experience developing electronic products from concept through prototype and into manufacture

Strong experience designing mixed-signal electronic systems including analogue, digital and power electronics

Experience with schematic capture and multi-layer PCB design using Altium Designer (or an equivalent ECAD package)

Experience selecting components, designing circuits and integrating commercially available modules into complete electronic systems

Experience designing battery-powered embedded systems including battery charging, power regulation and power management

Experience designing interfaces for motors, pumps, LEDs, cameras, sensors and other peripheral devices

Strong hardware debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, power analysers and other laboratory equipment

Experience with PCB bring-up, fault finding and hardware verification

Understanding of EMC/EMI, signal integrity and design for reliability

Experience working with contract manufacturers and supporting PCB assembly and prototype builds

Experience planning technical work, managing electronics risks and taking ownership of engineering deliverables

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team

A proactive mindset with a willingness to take ownership of challenging technical problems

Nice to have

Experience developing electronics for medical devices or regulated products

Experience with optical systems including cameras, LEDs, photodiodes or imaging hardware

Experience designing motor driver circuits or fluidic/pump control systems

Experience with USB, USB-C or battery charging ICs

Familiarity with embedded firmware development and debugging

Knowledge of Design FMEA, Risk Management and Design Verification within regulated product development

Experience supporting Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Test (DFT)

Familiarity with standards such as IEC 60601, IEC 62304 or ISO 14971

Experience working closely with external PCB manufacturers, assembly partners and component suppliers

Prior work in a start-up or small company environment
