JOB TITLE: Engineering Manager –
REPORTS TO: Head of Engineering
FUNCTION/DEPT: Engineering
ROLE PURPOSE:
To lead the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the Engineering Department, ensuring that vehicles are maintained to the required roadworthiness, safety, quality and availability standards and that engineering colleagues are effectively supported and developed.
Core Responsibilities
• Lead, organise and supervise engineering, cleaning and fueling colleagues to ensure that planned and reactive work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
• Ensure that vehicles are fit for purpose, maintained in accordance with applicable legal requirements, manufacturer guidance and maintenance procedures, and available to support operational service.
• Maintain effective maintenance schedules, inspection records and supporting documentation so that they are complete, accurate and available for inspection.
• Monitor workshop productivity using the Freeway fleet management system, fuel use, stock levels, parts expenditure and cost-control activity, preparing routine weekly and monthly figures and reports for the TTOL Head of Engineering.
• Manage the engineering budget and contribute to the efficient control of stock, parts, tools, equipment and external repair costs. Report all defects to the Facilities Manager
• Ensure safety regulations and safe systems of work are followed throughout the workshop, depot and related facilities; investigate and address safety, quality and environmental concerns promptly. Work closely with the Health & Safety Manager.
• Lead technical responses to recurring defects, vehicle reliability issues, manufacturer or OEM technical bulletins, service enhancements and improvement opportunities. Highlight to TTOL Head of Engineering.
• Oversee facilities management responsibilities within the depot and workshop, including maintenance, security, cleaning and the safe management of engineering areas.
• Liaise with relevant licensing authorities, suppliers, contractors and internal managers as required, maintaining professional and constructive working relationships.
• Manage the performance, conduct, attendance, capability, training and development of engineering colleagues fairly, consistently and in line with HTL policies.
• Plan resources and prioritise work to minimise lost mileage Target of 0.50% of total operated mileage and service disruption, escalating significant fleet availability risks to the HTL Operations Manager.
• Adhering to the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, use this as a minimum standard to work to.
• Drive vehicles where required, authorised and appropriately licensed.
Systems and Tools
• Vehicle maintenance using Freeway, defect-reporting, freeway to manage inventory and procurement systems used by them.
• Workshop job cards, inspection and compliance records. All to be logged on Freeway
• Microsoft Office, including Excel for routine reporting, stock and cost control.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
Essential
• Substantial experience in commercial, PSV, bus or heavy vehicle engineering and maintenance, Minimum Level 3 qualification in Heavy Vehicle maintenance.
• Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)
• Demonstrable experience of leading, supervising or coordinating engineering teams in a safety-critical environment.
• Strong working knowledge of planned maintenance, vehicle roadworthiness, workshop safety and defect-management processes.
• Ability to manage resources, stock, budgets, priorities and performance information.
• Strong communication, organisational, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Full UK driving license.
Desirable
• Relevant engineering qualification, professional membership or manufacturer training.
• PCV license and / or relevant PSV engineering experience.
• Experience of fleet-management, maintenance-planning, inventory or procurement systems.
• Management or leadership qualification, or willingness to work towards one
