Senior Data Engineer – Java (Azure Cloud)

Location: Fully Remote (Must be UK based)

Employment Type: Long term contract

Overview

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Data Engineer with strong Java development experience to join a team delivering large‑scale data and backend solutions in a modern Azure cloud environment. This role is suited to someone who enjoys working across data platforms and backend systems, contributing to reliable, scalable data pipelines and services that support business‑critical use cases.

What You’ll Be Doing

Developing and maintaining Java‑based services that support data processing and integration

Delivering and improving data pipelines, including batch workloads and scheduled processing

Working closely with engineering and data teams to ensure high‑quality, reliable data outputs

Designing solutions with performance, scalability, and maintainability in mind

Supporting deployments and releases through automated CI/CD processes

Investigating and resolving issues across development, test, and production environments

Participating in peer reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives

Contributing within an Agile delivery model

What We’re Looking For

Strong commercial experience using Java in backend or service‑oriented environments

Proven exposure to data engineering concepts, including ETL/ELT pipelines and data transformations

Solid SQL skills for querying, validation, and troubleshooting

Experience working with cloud‑based data platforms such as data lakes or data warehouses

Hands‑on experience in an Azure environment

Familiarity with modern engineering practices including source control and automated deployment

Good understanding of distributed systems and service‑to‑service communication

Technical Environment

Java (backend / services)

Azure cloud services

Data processing platforms (e.g. Spark or cloud data warehouses)

CI/CD toolingGit or similar version control

Containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes (desirable)

Nice to Have

Exposure to data monitoring, quality, or observability tooling

Experience working in larger, complex system landscapes

Mentoring or technical leadership experience
