DevOps Engineer
Department: Tech - Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Zinc - London
Reporting To: Iliasu Oko-Osi
Compensation: £62,000 / year
Description
Zinc’s engineering team has grown continuously over the last few years and continues to scale, in order to maintain and support this growth within the engineering function we’re looking to grow the team in order to better support the platform as well as developers going forward.
As a result Zinc is now looking to add a dedicated DevOps engineer to maintain and extend Zinc’s Platform offerings as well as improving Developer experience within the organisation as we look to the future by revamping our architecture, CI pipelines and deployment strategy in order to enable us to scale the engineering function.
Key Responsibilities
What You Will Focus on First
Working closely with the Platform Lead to understand the business and requirements, how the engineering team currently functions, and our current approach to the DevOps mindset within the company.
Targeting areas of the app to revamp and modernise, alongside the wider organisation, to help achieve the scalable architecture needed to hit company goals.
What You'll Own
Developer Experience - defining new tools and policies to maintain and improve Developer Experience, whilst driving quality across the Engineering function.
Platform Architecture - collaborating with the Platform Lead to plan strategic improvements to the Zinc Platform, enabling the company's tech to scale alongside the customer base.
CI/CD - ensuring platform pipelines follow best practices, defining what "great" looks like across the tech stack, and maintaining the velocity the team achieves day-to-day.
What Success Looks Like
Shows curiosity about how Zinc operates and embeds within the wider engineering team, helping developers be the best they can be.
High levels of ownership and passion, driving quality within the organisation.
Working with the Platform Lead to plan and architect future revamps of the tech stack.
Proactive in solving engineering problems across a wide range of areas.
Reporting Line & Ways of Working
Reports directly to the Platform Lead, working closely day-to-day to shape and deliver the platform roadmap.
No on-call rotation for this role, and no plans to introduce one - the focus is on building resilient systems and processes that reduce the need for reactive firefighting in the first place.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
What We're Looking For
A strategic thinker
Comfortable working alongside the Platform Lead and happy to wear many hats with support.
This is a mid-to-senior level role, we care far more about the scope and depth of what you've owned and delivered than ticking a specific years-of-experience box, so don't rule yourself out if your path here has been non-traditional.
Technical background
Wide ranging experience across the DevOps, SRE or Platform Engineering space.
Adept at working with Typescript codebases, with a good understanding of YAML within the context of CI/CD pipelines.
Comfortable working with containers and container orchestration (we run our platform on AWS ECS). Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling such as CircleCI is a strong plus.
Experience debugging and understanding performance issues within Javascript, with a good understanding of functional programming.
Experience with Terraform or comparable IaC tooling. Terraform and Terragrunt are both part of our current stack, so familiarity with Terragrunt specifically is a plus.
Communication
Strong communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical team members.
Cloud
Strong cloud skills, AWS is a preference given our stack, but we recognise the overlap with other cloud providers so candidates from different backgrounds are welcome to apply.
