Junior Data Analyst

Buy It Direct is one of the UK's fastest-growing online retailers. Appliances Direct, Laptops Direct, Furniture123, Better Bathrooms, Drones Direct - they're all ours, and between them they shift an enormous amount of product every day. Every one of those orders leaves a trail of data behind it, and our Data team is the one that helps turns that trail into decisions.

We don't follow the normal ways of working. We think unconventionally, we move quickly, and we'd rather back someone with the right attitude and teach them the rest. That's exactly what this role is.

The role

This is a genuine entry point into a data career. You'll sit in the Data team, who will show you the ropes, and you'll be given real work from day one. Over time you'll learn how our data is put together, how the business uses it, and how to spot when something isn't adding up.

What matters most to us is how you think. If you're the sort of person who can't leave an obscure number or pattern alone until you understand why and are comfortable asking questions, you're the kind of person we’re looking for.

What you'll be doing

• Digging into the numbers when something looks off and working out why and ultimately proposing solutions that drive improvement.
• Learning how our data flows from website to warehouse to reporting and getting to know the quirks in it.
• Getting under the skin of how our processes work and flagging where they could work better.
• Answering questions from around the business and asking plenty of your own.
• Building up your technical toolkit (SQL, Python, R) with support from the team around you.

What we're looking for

We are far more interested about your attitude, work ethic and curiosity than we are about your technical or educational background. Specifically:

• A genuine drive to understand how things work, not just what the number is, but why it is what it is.
• The tenacity to keep pulling at a thread when the answer isn't obvious.
• An eye for improvement: if a process is clunky or a report takes three hours it shouldn't, we want you to say so.
• Comfort with numbers and logical, structured thinking.
• The professional confidence to ask questions of people more senior than you, and the clarity to explain what you've found.
• A background in a numerate or scientific subject - maths, science, engineering, computing or similar - to at least A Level or equivalent. Degree, apprenticeship, self-taught, career-changer: all welcome.

What you don't need

You do not need to be able to write code already. SQL, Python or R are all part of the job eventually, but we're happy to teach you. What we need is the aptitude and appetite to pick them up. You also don't need commercial experience, a data degree, or a portfolio of projects. If you've got those, great. If you haven't, apply anyway.

We're happy for you to use AI tools as part of your application and interview. It's something you’ll be utilising as part of the role. We're interested in how you think with it.
