For more than 60 years, the Group has been committed to helping cities and regions contribute to their development by creating, improving, and modernising their transport infrastructure with sustainability, accessibility, and innovation at the heart of our designs. With over 10,300 colleagues globally and around 1000 in the UK & Ireland we are growing significantly and seeking out the very best talent to join the SYSTRA signature team and be part of leading the way in infrastructure design.

We have an opportunity for a Senior Data Scientist to join our growing Data Science Team. You will get the opportunity to contribute to and lead data science projects for a wide variety of customers across SYSTRA’s consultancy and engineering departments.

This role could be based from either our Manchester, Dublin or Reading offices. SYSTRA have adopted a hybrid working model, where you will balance time spent working collaboratively in our state of the art offices with time working from home.

You will get the opportunity to work closely with customers and business experts to scope and design the most effective and appropriate offers to solve their problems.

Current and past tasks range from using machine learning to extract causality for road collision severity, to visualising and mapping insights; using computer vision AI techniques to extract information from raster imaging saving weeks of work; improving and automating workflows; harvesting data from open datasets or licensed APIs; and building dashboards which provide an overview of the impact of spending on public transport. Project duration varies from hours to months and your specialisms are likely to be expanded and build on as part of your role.

Suitable candidates will have the following:

Proficiency with one or more programming languages, including Python, and ability to write structured and maintainable code

Experience working with source control systems such as Git

Hands-on experience in preparation of data, cleaning and transforming it for downstream data science tasks

Strong problem-solving skills which can be applied to client challenges and resolving issues that arise from implementation of data science solutions

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to tell compelling stories and adjust style to suit clients/stakeholders with varied technical knowledge

A passion for learning new technologies and an interest in the Transportation, Environment or Energy sectors

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or related fields

Relevant industry experience, including demonstrable experience of delivering solutions, including machine learning, digital products, and working with large scale data

Desirable Skills and Experience

Experience of working in a delivery team using Scrum methods

Experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server or Oracle

Experience with dashboard tools such as PowerBI or Tableau

Experience with Spatial Data Science tools and processes

Experience with Azure, Amazon or Google cloud architecture

Knowledge of the data landscape in the UK and Ireland

Data processing, analysis and visualization skills

Strong problem-solving skills in relation to data science projects

Proficiency in Python, R, C#, JavaScript or another programming language

Proficiency with Git or similar source control systems

SQL and Database experience
